Santa Paula is often described as a "quaint town" with a main street reminiscent of Middle America but with a Mexican flavor. Oil was discovered in the late 1800s, leading to the birth of the Union Oil Company, commemorated at the Santa Paula Union Oil Museum located downtown. The Santa Paula Museum of Art and Farm Heritage Museum are in the planning stages in the same Santa Paula Train Station at Nightarea. Around the city you will see numerous murals depicting the city's history. The city's population grew following the discovery of oil, and prominent families built exquisite homes in their new community, many of which have been preserved or restored.
